Should My Project Be Submitted for Review?

In accordance with federal regulations, the Highline College IRB must review all research involving human subjects related to our campus. If you are doing research on living people or information connected to living people, then you must submit your research project application to the IRB for approval prior to starting. When in doubt, ask us! We’re here to help.

  • What is research?

Research is a systematic investigation designed to develop knowledge that adds to generalized knowledge in a field. If you plan to present or publish the work or otherwise share results of the study, it is probably research.

  • What are human subjects?

Human subjects are defined as: living individual(s) about whom an investigator conducting research obtains (1) data through intervention or interaction with the individual; or (2) identifiable private information.
